Script on Year 2 prutah
« on: October 04, 2011, 04:39:35 pm »
I'm trying to recreate the script on my year 2 and 3 prutahs.  Here is the year 2, the red is what I see and the green is what I think would have been there originally.  Any improvements would be fantastic, I stink at this.

                            Thanks
Edit: It almost seems like there's an extra leaf on the reverse??

You are right about the legends.  From what I see you are 100% correct :).

Aarmale, Can you explain the different spelling on the year 2 and 3 reverses?  According to the references, both read, "The freedom of Zion" and yet most of the year 2 reverses are a letter shorter than year 3.

In one case 'freedom' is spelled חרות, in the other - חרת, both ways are legitimate.

it is very normal for the script to miss a letter or two and some times even more in one word in Judaean coinage, it is due to unskilled die engravers or a short flan.
the only deference between year 2 and three Jewish war prutah is the amphora top and SH N T- SH L O SH  instead of SH N T- SH T Y M.
regards.

This phenomenon also occurs with the Shekels of the First Revolt.

The reverse of the coins during year 1 have the inscription "ירושלם קדשה" (Jerusalem [the] Holy; regularly transliterated as yrwšlm qdšh).  The later coins have the same legend (except it has the prefix for "the"), but it is spelled "ירושלים הקדושה" (yrwšlym hqwdšh).

As Salem said, this is very common, and often occurs when letters cannot fit on a die.
