Postumus
« on: September 03, 2011, 02:10:16 pm »
Hi,   here is one of my recent additions in my Gallery.   It took a little while to properly catalog it because I had a hard time finding an exact match on acsearch.  I was just curious if anyone would know if this type is rarer than many other Postumus coins?  Whenever I get a coin that is harder to identify I wonder how rare it is or if it might be more valuable than the standard coin.    Thanks for any info,

Danny

It's not one of the commonest ones, but I wouldn't describe it as 'rare' either. I wouldn't have thought it was worth much more than other types, if anything. You can't go by online sources as they miss out so many common coins. RIC lists it as 'common', but that just means that it was found in several Western European museums.

Here's mine.

I have (had) some 50 Postumus coins in my collection, but no Salus. Probably doesn't mean much, but....

While on this subject does anyone know of any good internet sies for the IDing and dating of Postumus coins?

I have been looking for a while but all of the sites I've seen seem confused and even contradictory when it gets to the Mint I/II Trier/lyon/Cologne situation.  I usually end up so confused I give up when trying to assign mints and issues.  Can this even be done with a high level of accuracy or this it all a bit 'grey' and not worth doing?

Many thanks, exactly what I was looking for  :)

Just the facts presented in a clear methodical way - other sites could learn a lot from this.

This is the one page I found that seemed accurate, concise and consistent:

I prefer Sebastian Sondermann's site: http://gallic-empire.com/

Please note, though, that the mint question and some datings of Gallic Empire coins are disputed among scholars.

Thanks Robert and Lars!   Sometimes I forget how much of everything Forvm has to offer with various links and other info on the sight.   Lars, that is a very good Postumus sight.  Didn't have to scroll down far to find mine on there.

Thanks again,   Danny
