Seleucid Demetrius I Tetradrachm, opinions please
« on: September 04, 2011, 06:18:21 pm »
Hello all,

I'm attributing a coin from a recent batch and I am relatively certain that it's a fake, but I would like others' opinions.

The measurements are 30 mm and 15.70 g.  (measurements are within acceptable range).

There are multiple reasons why I condemn this coin:

* There are no monograms.  I have never seen this type without a monogram (or multiple monograms) either below the throne, left or right field, or both.  No coins listed in Spaer or SC without monograms.

* odd uneven/unnatural toning, especially on reverse.  Also possible (and multiple) casting bubbles.

* multiple smoothing scratches on reverse, probably made prestrike in flan preparation.

* style of Tyche's dress and tritoness.  Every coin I've examined has Tyche's dress dipping below the throne, not like on this coin.

* but the most telling reason I think it's fake is the reverse legend style.  This coin has block-style letters where authentic coins have a legend who's points end in pellets.

I am attaching an authentic version of this coin sold by Forum for comparison of legend style.

I am curious to see others opinions of this coin,

Thanks,
Tom

Terrible reverse style, flat fields, and the axis is off, too.

Best regards,

I forgot to mention, the die axis is 135 degrees. (about 4:30)
