New Greek Purchase - Real or Fake?
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:48:36 pm »
An acquaintance asked the following:

"Just got this on a low budget purchase. It's a notoriously faked coin. Did I get a real one or a fake?

It came from a good dealer. But I still have a lot of trouble determining real from fake. 14.57mm 2.68 grams"

I know next to nothing about Greek coins.  Any help would be appreciated.

I try and stay away from these because the fakes are so convincing at times. But here is a CNG coin I found which looks very close to yours. Pretty close if not a die match maybe. I can't vouch for yours one way or the other.

CNG Auction #40
Lot Number: 64552
Estimate: $100.00
Final Sale Price: $71.50
Denomination: Drachm
Grade: Good VF
Reference: SNG BM Black Sea 160-163; SNG Stancomb 35-38

Thrace, Black Sea Area. Apollonia Pontika. Circa 450 BC. AR Drachm (2.85 gm). Facing
gorgoneion / Anchor; A to left, crayfish to right. SNG BM Black Sea 160-163; SNG
  Stancomb 35-38
