King Henri IV of france medal or restrike?
« on: August 20, 2011, 03:29:52 am »
Hello
I'm not sure how to go about this but here goes!(nubee)
I have a old french medal/token and need a valuation.this is what I've found out searching the internet .front is King Henri IV of France date 1591
back is a foundry with tools used at mint to strike coins.made of high grade Silver.possably a paris mint restrike? has edge mark with cornicopia and number 1-argent possible date made 1840's
After many hours of research I've only found three examples on the internet. could be rare?I received this from my mother about 30 years ago and my family has great provenance to early France, family tree goes back to 13th century
any info or input on this would be greatly appreciated!
here's some links Ive found
http://www.cgb.fr/monnaies/vso/v24/fr/monnaies8ae4.html

This link shows different token but with a similar edge mark

Here's a link on medals and edge marks
http://www.historicalartmedals.com/MEDAL%20WEB%20ENTRIES/BIOSKETCHES%20AND%20OTHER%20TEXT/NOTES/dating_french_medals_by_edge.htm

this one is about someone finding one in France
http://www.passion-histoire.net/n/www/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=18049&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I believe the artist for this medal is Guillaume Dupré
[French Baroque Era Sculptor, ca.1576-1643] link to him

http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/dupre_guillaume.html

The edge mark is the key to this puzzle  is it real or a restrike?

IMO a 19th c. (possibly later) restrike as indicated not only by the marks on the border but by the King's bust.

John,

A similar ex can be found here:
http://www.numishop.eu/fiche-fjt_216375-mo_jet-1-HENRY_IV_Medaille_debut_XIXe_au_type_du_passe_des_monnayeurs_de_l_atelier_de_Ch_lons_en_Champagne_1591.html
It is an early 19th token imitating the very rare Henri IV Châlons monneyers' pass token, one of which was sold by CGB (the link you mentioned). However, the edge on your ex with 'Argent' (silver) tag indicates a modern restrike, as indicated by your link (http://www.napoleonicmedals.org/coins/pe-1962.htm)
