Severus Alexander AE26
« on: August 03, 2011, 08:42:05 pm »
I know this is probably an Alexander Severus AE26 of Markianopolis, but I would like confirmation on attribution, legends, etc.  I could not find many examples online.  The Wildwinds example is excellent (and no surprise that it belongs to Jochen!) and mine appears similar, but I do not know if it is an exact match or a variant.  [REMOVED BY ADMIN] Can anyone help me decipher this?

Noah,

Marcianopolis indeed, but actually Elagabalus and Maesa, as you can tell from the governor Ioul. Ant. Seleucus on the reverse.

Thanks Curtis!  The seller had it mislabled, but I think I got a nice coin anyway.  I know little about provincials, so I did not think about it.  I did, however, think the portrait looked more elongated as Elagabalus portraits often are.  For what I paid, I saw little risk!  Ok, can anyone help with particulars now?

Best, Noah

I went through acsearch but found nothing. It's always hit and miss for me. I need to work on my search strings..... I Did find lots of Julia Domna and Caracalla with the serpent Agathadaemon on the reverse. I don't have my Varbanovs with me while I'm traveling.

I found 3 acsearch links:
http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=415379
http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=171497
http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=69940

Second link takes me to Sev. Alex. and Maesa, governor Festus, so quite different.

Third link however seems to be from same obv. die as Noah's coin, rev. has a slightly different arrangement of basically the same legend.

Oh, I see, thank you! I was looking for double-headed obverse, matching reverse and keyword МАІСА in obverse legend! And didn't pay any attention to so obvious Alexander's name on obverse! Sometimes such things happen... :(

Thank you gentlemen!  sagit, I appreciate the effort in finding coins to match mine.  Romanorvm, I do the same thing; I browse with my limited cyber-knowledge and my search strings are pitiful!
Thanks mix_val; I have no idea what it is really worth (more-or-less), but knew it had to be more than what I paid (plus it was "speaking" to me!).  Curtis, as always, and it goes without saying, your expertise is literally world class!  Thank you.

Best, Noah

I agree it is very nice, and, using the 2010 edition* of HrJ Marcianopolis, it is 6.28.22.5, certainly the same reverse die and I think also the same obverse die.  Their reference to P.R. (= Pick & Regling, though the latter had nothing to do with Marcianopolis), AMNG I, 1, nos. 972, 973) are not necessarily the same die pair, but see Pick's list of variants for no. 972.  No. 973, with the E in the exergue, is not your reverse.
