An irregular mintmark PAX AVG
« on: July 21, 2011, 04:39:26 pm »
Hi,

I've just acquired the following coin with a rather unusual mintmark form:

Carausius 287-93AD
Antoninianus
Obv “IMP CARAVSIVS PF AVG”
Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Rev “PA[X AVG]”
Pax standing left holding vertical sceptre
Early London or, more likely, irregular mint
-/-//WL
RIC - (cf101)

The mintmark is not in the exerguge but at the start of the reverse legend. The "M" is inverted so it appears as "W" if one reads the mark correctly.

Interestingly FORVM sold a similar coin but of cruder style and with a different reverse type a couple of years ago and this is reproduced with their text below:

34673. Bronze antoninianus, RIC V - (cf. 155 for reverse type), VF, weight 3.600 g, maximum diameter 22.5 mm, die axis 270o, London mint, obverse IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right; reverse LM SALVS AVG, Salus standing facing, head left, feeding snake coiled round altar at left from patera in right hand, vertical scepter in left; rare;

Regards,

Mauseus
