Intaglio gem OTD - Birth of Dionysos
« on: July 13, 2011, 10:39:53 am »
Roman glass (imitating banded agate) intaglio gem c. 1st century AD
Birth of Dionysos: Zeus seated left, on column decorated at the base, raising his right leg; infant Dionysos rising from his thigh
0.44g; 12mm; intact but for minor chip 4 o’clock, of very fine style

Cf. Apollodorus III 4.3 and Apollonius Rhodius IV 1137 for the birth story.

Very very nice, much more personal than coins.

I once offered to buy one for my wife but she didn't seem keen. Shame

Fantastic Gert.  Perhaps we should start an Intaglio gallery?  I have a few and I'm sure others do also.

Thanks for the comments. A galery seems like a good idea, Jay. I have a few more that I think are worth sharing.
Regards
Gert
