Empty Token?
« on: May 20, 2011, 03:16:26 pm »
Hi All,

Is this the last token in planchet strip? Casted, unminted and trown out?

The token's diameter is 8-9mm.

The total length of this part is 19mm. I prepared some schematic illustration for full strip including number of planchets. I is not so clearly from the picture, but one side of this device is concave and one is flat.

I am betting it is jewlery.
I base my assumption on this:  If it held coin blanks, we undoubtably would have seen evidence of the shaft on at least some coins.  Since we have not, it must be something else.  Could be part of a buckle, a broche or some other item worn.

Thank you for telling your opinion.

The item is from Israel. You can see remains of the shaft on many Judean coins and also on small denominations from Alexandria (chalkon, dichalkon) from second century AD.

You can certainly see where the planchets were cut apart, but you don't normally find raised strips crossing coin faces! Striking that would be impossible.

Correct me of I am wrong, but weren't the blanks cut with a iron saw? Or were they poured into mold to form the shape and then struck?

There were quite a few different ways of making planchets. The one being referred to involved a slab of stone, with lines of shallow holes drilled in it, joined by a channel. It was (presumably) tied together with another slab, making a closed mould, and metal poured in. The strip of planchets was extracted, struck, and cut apart with a chisel.

Interesting.  This does not resemble Judaean coin planchets. Generally, unstruck planchets have sprues and a raised dot.
Note the sprues:

This one is actually 2 coins that are uncut and unstruck.

I doubt that your artifact is a coin planchet.
