Any Ideas?
« on: April 04, 2011, 03:30:02 pm »
My wifes grandad found this coin on his allotment recently and despite extensive searching on the internet, we are none the wiser to its origin. Any info would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance

Matt

The obverse legends reads ΔΕΛΦΟΙ ΗΝΙΟΧΟΣ, the bust is of HNIOXOΣ, a bronze statue found at Delphoi, see here
http://www.sikyon.com/Delphi/Art/delphi_gr02.html

Reverse legends reads ΠΥΘΙΑ ΔΕΛΦΟΙ, Apollo's tripod.

Probably some kind of modern medal, prize for the winners of athletic games (?)

Best regards

I wrote "modern" only because it is not ancient.
However, it is not that late, i estimate this probably between 1900-1940

Best regards

Google Olympic medals 1900-1940. That will probably lead you somewhere.
