Mystery Silver Coin
« on: February 20, 2011, 05:30:50 pm »
Hello All,

I have been wondering what this little silver coin is.  It weighs 1.14g and its diameter is 13-15mm.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Cliff

The legend is in Cyrillic; that may help for a start.

No it is not just Cyrillic it is Russian. The legend is something as "Seal of Prince XXX Dimitri".

Ahhh!  Thanks Commodus and Explorer, but I still can't find a match!  Anybody have any ideas or leads?

Thanks, and sorry to keep bugging you all about this one.

This may help: http://www.chicagocoinclub.org/projects/PiN/ecm.html

Looks like it is one of the earliest coins from Moscow (google is a wonderful thing!!!) and most likely Dimitri Donskoi.

Chris, you are the man! I was misspelling Dimitri as Dmitri and coming up with nothing. I will investigate further and see if I can find an exact match.

Hello Cliff,

have you seen the following coin already?
http://www.mcsearch.info/record.html?id=165980
It looks like a twin of your coin.
But it has been withdrawn from auction by Stack's.
If the coin from Stack's is not your coin then it probably is a forgery because there cannot be two identical coins.

Holy moly!  It looks like the exact same coin. I bought it in a large lot from a dealer. I need to look at my eBay records to see who it was. The plot thickens. Or maybe the story is over!

At least I got to learn about Russian coins in the process!

Thanks!

Exactly!!! You are a man after my own heart! (here's hoping that it isn't a fake, though!)
