Mystery Greek Fractional
« on: February 25, 2011, 02:00:03 am »
I know there are many small Greek silver issues out there that defy identification, but I was hoping someone could help me with these two coins.
Its specifics are:
0.14g
5.5mm
Male head rt. /
 :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Mu:
symbol,  :Greek_Mu: :Greek_Alpha:
 :Greek_Lambda: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Kappa: :Greek_Omicron: or  :Greek_Lambda: :Greek_Iota: :Greek_Lambda: :Greek_Omicron:, within an incuse punch.

I would appreciate any insights into this coin as I have been searching for some time.

also we have a second mystery coin which was found with it:

8mm
0.46g
Head of roaring lion rt. / Maybe a monogrammed Theda within a square border of dots in an incuse punch.
It could be a Magnesian Themistokles issue.

I appreciate anyone who takes the time to add anything.

Thanks! I looked through that database but missed them!

Now for the first coin.

Could it be a stylized turtle?

The second one clearly is like Rosen 406; SNG Kayhan 746, I had forgotten I had finally found that. The first coin is the real mystery.

Fausta

Could you tell me what the second coin is identified as in SNG Kayhan, or is it also just 'uncertain mint in Asia' as in Rosen?

I have what appears to be a quarter obol (0.17 gm) which I posted for identification a couple of years ago but got no reply.

Best wishes

Alan,
Yes SNG Kayhan 746 is listed an "Uncertain Mints of Ionia or Caria" and a Milesian Standard Hemiobol. Yours looks to be a half. Interesting.
Thanks for sharing it!

Couldn't begin with FAMA could it (used on coins of Corcyra) ?

I have been looking for anything with GAM.., TAM.., FAM.. in my very long excel list of Greek legends as well as in Icard and I keep coming back to Amadocus II, Thracian king, with AMADOKO(S)..
I have not added all the many thousands of legends which are e.g. in Mionnet to my excel list, so it would be a big job to look for it in Mionnet.

It really looks like a gamma. At first I thought Gambrion but the city doesn't seem to have issued coins during the period these fractionals were in vogue. I had figured the GAM was the place name as the rest seems to be separated by the symbol but that needn't be the case. I have had it for many years and it has defied explanation. It was found with other issues from Western Asia minor including Assos, Cyzicus, Teos, Colophon and some Carian types including a few of those strange Artemis/Stag fractionals refered to as Ephesian or Bargylian.

I doubt that it is in fact a Greek legend. I looked elsewhere (Pamphylia, Cilicia) but not very intensively.

Frank,
Thanks. I had shown images of the coin to some specialists in carian and Pamphylian and they didn't think it was this. I initially thought it was some other language but have yet been unable to find anything in the 10 or so years I have had the coin.
