Autonomous Tabaristan AE Falus?
« on: February 19, 2011, 10:24:52 am »

I have asked about this one here before, without any luck.  The tag says:

Tabaristan, autonomous AE Falus, ND bust left holding falcon? overstruck on 2 busts type.

Any help identifying this coin will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi KIR

If you turn the reverse 90 degrees there are traces of an iscription which is surely 18th century rather than 8th century AD, and the flan looks much more 18th-19th century than the thin flans of Sasanian/Arab-sasanian pieces.

I don't recall anything like this in Malek's book on the Ispahbads.

Do you have a reference for this?

Best wishes

Alan

90-150AH is too early for me as well

at that time Umayyad or arab byzantine coins were circulating and were different from this one.

if this was my coin i would look into the local coinage struck in Iran in the 18th century as a lead
