I plan to attend a large annual show in Philadelphia next month, so I intend to replenish my collecting budgethttp://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-70826

I was planning to be there also, but alas, parent's weekend at my son's university coincides with the show.  Next time...

During the last week I’ve had the pleasure to add two specimens to my Republican Denarii Collection.  The most recent of which is:

L. Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus & Q. Servilius Caepio - Calpurnia-5a

Roman Republic. L. Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus & Q. Servilius Caepio. 100 B.C. AR Denarius. (3.922 grams 17mm).
Laureate head of Saturn r.; behind, harpa; around, PISO. CAEPIO. Q.
Two male figures (Quaestors) seated on bench (subsellium) side by side; to l. and r., corn-ear; in exergue, AD. FRV. EMV. EX. S. C.
Sydenham 603, Crawford 330/1a, RCV 210, RSC Calpurnia-5a

Seaby notes: A law was passed to allow the people to buy corn at "a semis and a triens for a modius". The Senate ordered the quaestors to strike this special issue of coins so that they could fulfill the provisions of this law.

Thanks Danny,

Although I still actively collect Imperial Denarii, I favor the Republican issues.  I started collecting Republican Denarii because I am attracted to the beauty and diversity of designs.

Thank you.  I love sharing my growing collection with people who appreciate ancient coins.  Obviously, I also share with my family & friends, but I don't think they fully understand my passion.  ;)

Bud,

While RR is not my area of interest, a quick browse through your collection leaves no doubt as to why these coins are so desirable.

Your RR collection is of uniformly high quality and the imagery is fantastic, which makes leaving your RR page open in my browser quite an enjoyable experience!

Thanks Mark,

While lately I've given a little more attention to Republican, I still add denarrii to my Imperial Collection.  I’m contemplating including antoniniani, so I can add a few new emperors to my cabinet.

I have a new favorite coin that I feel a need to share with my FORUM mates.  I was very happy when this one came on the market.  I’ve had a Sergia-1 on my “wish list” since I started my collection on Republican Denarii.

ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius M. Sergius Silus Rome 116-115 B.C. (3,89 gm).
Helmeted head of Roma right, EX•S• C before, ROMA and X (XVI ligate) behind.
Helmeted horseman galloping left, holding sword and severed head in left hand, Q below horse’s forelegs, M SERGI below, SILVS in ex
Syd 534, Cr286/1, Sear 163, RSC I Sergia-1

Just added another Republican denarius

I love these issues of the dying days of the Republic.  If only coins like this could speak. Oh, what ‘tales they could tell’.

With full knowledge that this is not a Republican Issue, I have placed it in my “Republican Gallery” for ‘safe keeping’ until I move it:

Marc Antony 32-31 BC. AR Legionary Denarius (3.33 gm).
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-65855

? Why is it not a Republican issue. It's an issue of Mark Antony, who, per his title was a Triumvir Reipublicate Constituendae - One of three Men for the Regulation of the Republic. You can't get more Republican than that!

The Roman Republic ended on Monday 16th January 27BC when Octavian renounced his Roman Republican proconsular and triumviral powers (which were given by the Senate), and the Senate instead gave him the titles of Princeps and Augustus, and appointed him to a ten year responsibility for many of the provinces. It was evident from that point onwards that there was no intention of anyone to revert to the Republican constitution. Prior to 16/1/-27, anything was possible - Octavian might have not accepted the Princeps/Augustus roles nor the imperial provinces and instead, as Sulla had done, established a plan to put the Senate and People back in the driving seat.
