Hello Mattew:
MS is actually right in Alexandria, Antioch, Cyzicus, Heraklea, Kocaeli, Thessalonica. Host is preceded by M. I not answer because the money is sacred in these ticks and not in others. I will try to bring the question on the FAC Italian: there is a specialist in the coinage of Constantine.
Oriental mints use greek letter for the Officina and occidental using latin letters, but Cyzicus and Nicomedia use both and Alexandria (in Vrbs Roma) uses sometimes two letters: these coins are not in Ric.

I should have seen that coming!  :)
Thanks for the help in asking further!

wow, thanks! Just when I think I've started to understand the officina marks.... that's actually what I enjoy about ancient coins though - there is an awful lot to learn :)

All of this topic about Vrbs Roma has been summarized in a long article (in italian - 27 pages) published in "Abstract of studies of the Cultural Italy Numismatics (IV/2009 - 192 pages - euros 15 = US$ 25).

For Matthew:

From Italian FAC:

"MS initially appears only in the eastern mints with Constantine and family closer. Then in the second half of the fourth century were also the initials SM coins minted in Rome, Milan, Aquileia, and (rarely) even at Treves. Before Constantine, Diocletian Lenaia with coins coined at Lyons in exergue SML ..
In Londinium, the first coins were minted in Nice in exergue ML (currency Londini) MLN, MSL ... Letters will be overtaken also by Constantine I between 314 and 316 ...
Ostia under Maxentius and Constantine have the exergue of the series most ...
Instead Siscia and Constantinople did not coin "sacred money" ..
Without considering then that the remaining ticks alternate Oriental (same under Constantine I) exergue with or without MS
So it is possible that there was a reason behind the use or otherwise of this "title": there is much (too much?) Variability

Postscript
In Rome, the follis anepigrafi minted in 326 by Constantine I in his name and Constantine II and Constantius II, in exergue have SMRP ... there is no doubt however that these particular coins were, I'd say celebratory."

Hi antvwala,I want to know your opinion on this coin. The seller says this coin is 1.80 gm , 12 mm.Is it offical or barbarous? To me the obverse seems official but I'm not sure.I have hardly ever seen an official 1/2 follis Vrbs Roma coin.Do these 1/2 follis Vrbs Roma coins are all barbarous? Thanks.

Hi!
TR(dot)S is an exergue uses frequently for imitatives of Britania.

Hi,
It is an official issue of Trier, the seller must have made a mistake about the diameter. In terms of style it is typically Trier. There are no such things as half folles of this type, only irregular imitations.

Adrianus
