Help to clean a nice Constantine follis
« on: November 26, 2010, 02:21:18 pm »
I recently bought this nice coin badly cleaned by the seller.

Could someone suggest me how to clean this not-so-common coin?

Very best regards
Nicola

Are the cleaning scratches on the dirt or on the surface of the coin?

It almost looks like someone scratched it trying to clean it and then attempted to cover it up with an applied sandy patina.  But I think larger pictures are needed for advice on how to deal with it.

If it is simply scratches in the dirt, maybe a wet q-tip rubbed in a circular manner would even out the remaining dirt.

Firstly, thank you for your help.

This is the seller's photo...i hanvn't a better one.
Sratches look to be on the dirt....as i hope...what do you think? it's strange that a scrach on the coin has the same colour of the "patina"...

When the coin arrives i will post immediatly better photo :)
very best regards

a boil in distilled water followed by a chopped down tooth brush scrubbing ought to work nicely

Personally I like the coin as is and would just keep it that way.

It could be made to look a whole lot worse.

To me it looks like the surface of the coin is scratched, that the coin was covered with sand/dirt post-scratching, and that some of the sand/dirt was removed so that you now can see the dirst in the crevices whichis why the scratches are the same color as the dirt.

If that's the case, I think I'd leave it as is too.  Removal of more dirt may reveal more scratches.

Coin finally arrived..

Dino,
you were right, scratches are on the coin..and it looks to be coin wax on it.

I will leave the coin as is  :) No doubts...
