Elagabalus with Hygeia feeding Snake: Nikopolis
« on: November 24, 2010, 08:12:46 am »
Hello

I have a Roman provincial coin with Elagabalus on the obverse and Hygeia feeding a snake from a patera on the reverse.
11 g and 24.4 mm diameter
The obverse legend reads: [AVTKMAVPH] ANT W NEIN[OC]
The reverse legend reads: [VP] NOBIOV POVFOV [NIKO]PW[L IT W  N P POCICT

My question is that all the examples I have seen have  RADIATE bust.
Mine is clearly not radiate.

I cant find an example like this anywhere.
Is this an unknown type?
or
Have I misidentified it in some way?

Thanks!
Kevin

What you can find on the internet is just a tiny part of the coins that are out there and, even if you did an exhausting search without result it is no reason to believe your coin is unknown or unique. I have found several laureate Elagabalus coins that size from Nikopolis with Hygieia reverse.

The coin shows the typical portrait of Elagabal under Novius Rufus. It can't be Markianopolis. I think it's HrJ 8.26.21.6. In the left field should be TR, but it looks rather like CR. It is known that at this type legend errors occur.

Thanks!
What does HrJ 8.26.21.6 refer to?

HrJ = Hristova/Jekov

8   = Nicopolis ad Istrum
26 = Elagabal
21 = Hygieia (Salus)
6   = 6th listed type

Best regards
