Onviously plated Roman coin
« on: November 20, 2010, 08:01:24 am »
There is not much but I'd put my bet on Antonius Pius with this one. Could anyone confirm this?  I do possess some other plated coins; this is the first time I come across a plated bronze coin. Is this common? As far as I know it only makes sense with silver coins. I wonder what the material of the inner core is. Advice will be appreciated!

It looks like Marcus Aurelius to me. I don't think it's plated. It's just the mineralized surface which is flaking off.

A good example, where the information is in the layer of patina alone, and not at all in the metal underneath.

Then it's an As and it should be copper.

It's a very educational piece but if you drop it on your desk even once the rest of the detail may just fall off.

I can't see any plating, must be the rest of a former patina.

yes indeed, you must be careful with this one. I have "cleaned" the details right off of coins like this before, lol.
All the best,
