Rough silver/billon Ant - probably eastern
« on: November 15, 2010, 05:14:04 pm »
Hello ID masters,

This rough little ant has been vexing me for a few days now.  I really can't make out much on the coin, but the figure on the obverse seems to have a hawkish nose and bags under his eyes.  The reverse seems to have a figure leaning against a short column.  It's not a pretty coin, but something about the portrait grabbed me, and I just can't figure out who is on the coin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards,
Cliff

Looks to be AN around the 10oclock, and it does not look to be Caracalla...(Curtis is almost certainly right!)

Caracalla's antoniniani never have obv. IMP ANTONINVS AVG, always ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM. Nor do they ever show Providentia on the rev.

Again, I am in awe of the knowledge of the members of this board.  Curtis and Casata, if I could borrow your brains for a few hours I could probably get all the coins in my collection attributed!  It looks like my coin is a match for Elagabalus RIC 129.  And worth the $4.75 I paid for it--maybe  :)

Thanks again guys.  Who knows, in a few years I might be able to quickly and accurately reply to people's posts on this board--maybe  :)

From the traces of rev. legend I think your coin is the dated version of that Providentia type, legend

P M TR P II COS II P P, RIC 22, not the undated version,

PROVID DEORVM, RIC 129.
