Hadrian or Trajan Sestertius?
« on: November 02, 2010, 03:11:42 pm »
Some of Hadrian's and Trajan's portraits on coins are very distinct.  But also there some some bare headed portraits where they look very similar if the coin is not really clear.   On this one I have been leaning Hadrian.

It looks to me like the portrait is non-bearded. The style is also slightly more 'Trajanic' as well in my opinion.

After searching and searching on wildwinds of portraits of both Hadrian and Trajan, I still can't quite make a call.   Below I have what I thought could be similar type portraits that I found of both Trajan and Hadrian, but still don't seem to have a definite match either way.

It's Trajan. His hairstyle, his nose and his features. Granted it is very worn but I collect him solely and can spot his portrait in an instant.

Sounds good.  The one thing that was throwing me off was the look of the chin.  From the chin to the nose it almost looked like a mean old man scrunching his face.  It could deformed from wear a bit too.
