Evidence of a textile attached to coin
« on: October 22, 2010, 01:28:20 pm »
Folks,
I have a very dirty coin I bought as a Medieval which has evidence of a woven fabric in the dirt on the coin's surface.
I immediately suspended the thought of cleaning it because what is attached might be of historic significance.
Can anyone lend thier opinion?
       Thanks
Casey O

Casey,

I have absolutely ZERO expertise in this area, but I would not do ANYTHING to this coin until someone with some serious knowledge was able to look it over. To me, this has got to be almost unique and there might be as much information to be gained from the fabric as from the coin.

I take it that the coin has been in a bag of some kind in the past, right?

Great find!

Thats pretty cool!I agree, I wouldnt touch it either (but  I also have no expertise). Can you make out any of the detail of the coin? and can you post a picture of teh other side? Curious to see it is all.

MZ,
That's what I assume, buried in a bag, or maybe even a pocket!

I agree that it needs to be seen by someone who can study it and try to gain more than just a coin for thier collection.

Randygeki,
It's entirely coated with dirt, so no details are visible on either side.
it's 19 mm diameter avg.
Here's a picture of the back.

I read a paper about some coins that were found in a similiar context, where the weaving patterns were analyzed to describe the type of textiles used in that particular economy. Very interesting!
