Spade and knife: real or fake?
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:17:52 am »
Hi, I have been wondering for a while about the authenticity of these two pieces I bought years ago. The spade was bought on Ebay without any guarantee as to its origin (I was more naive back then  ::), I have become more cautious since). The knife on the other hand is from a more reliable dealer.
So, what do you think of those coins? Thanks!

Hello,

I think of the spades is of modern design. The patina looks not real.

The knife can be real, however, is difficult in photos to judge. The weight would be helpful.
Only in the picture I tend Too really. The patina looks like original grown.

I think it specialists will still announce themselves....

Greetings from Germany

Hallo,

Thanks, that's what I tought. If the knife is genuine, then it must be one of the most common types as it was not very expensive ($35-45 if I remember correctly).

This knife is a late issu Ming knife, the most common but there is many different varieties. I have more then 120Ming knives and most seller can't say if it's a common or a rare type...

I think it can be genuine but I saw so many good fake in china last month then I'm not sure... Can you provide me the name of the seller?

the spade is a fake of Wang Mang's spade, the patina is wrong, the calligraphy is not clear, these are 2 typical signs of fake

Regards

Thanks! (I didn't know they still made knives in the Ming period  :o - I thought all those unusual shapes were from BC (or at least before Wang Mang.)

Seller for the knife was Joelscoin, back in 2003 (they don't have them anymore).

Ming knife is not a knife made during Ming dynasty but just a kind of knife, the Ming knife are so called because of the reading of the obverse character, some people read it Yi or Yan but last hoard show us than Ming is probably the best reading.

This knife is from Warring state period (475-255 BC) and was minted by Yan kingdom.

you can find explains for the reading on this link http://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=82329

the knife on the link is from my own collection and is extremely rare, no more the 10 specimens known and I already have 3 of them...

Thanks for all the information! This is indeed the time period given for the knife. I'll just have to find a genuine spade now.
