ID for Hungarian denar 1532 C- lily mark
« on: September 28, 2010, 12:12:42 am »
A 1532 Ferdinand I denar. The only reference I have for these is Huszar and this one does not seem to be listed. The only 1532 with the C- lily mintmark I see is #943, but the legend is a match for #940 or #941, both C-  mintmarks, but 4 years earlier.
Was hoping someone could find a reference for this coin in another catalouge.
Thanks

Here is a 1528 that I would consider a match for Huszar #943, the only difference being that Huszar shows the N's as retrograde. Would this also be an Unger 744?
The 1532 has an obv. legend   FERDINAND*D*G*R*VNG*1532  and
the 1528 has an obv. legend   FERDINANDVS*R*VNGR*1528
I guess what I am asking is if the legend difference is considered unimportant.
Thanks for any replys

the legend FERDINANDVS*R*VNGARIE is mentioned in unger for #743. in this case, VNGR or VNGARIE could be of little importance as to the general type, but your coin is very interesting as it shows characteristics of both unger 743 and 744.
my opinion is that your coin could be showing the evolution of the type from 743 to 744, like a transition period from the 2 types in unger:

743 : FERDINANDVS*R*VNGARIE ; 1527 - 1528 date above the shield ------------------------->

your coin : FERDINANDVS*R*VNGR*1528 ; date in legend field ; cross above shield -------->

744d : FERDINAND*D*G*R*VNG* 1528 - 1532 ; date in legend field

great find, congrats.
