Al-Kamil?
« on: August 10, 2010, 02:59:04 pm »
Greetings, O knowledgeable ones.

This claims to be a fals of Al-Kamil Muhammad, son of Saladin's brother Al-Adil and a notable figure in the history of the Crusades.  Is that a correct identification, please?

Thanks for your help!

Yes I think so - with that distinctive tetrafoil it looks like Balog 420 Type C (with Caliph al-Mustansir)

I'm on the road without my references but I can read on left image "al-malik al-Kamil Muhammad (bin) Abu Bakr" (the prince al-Kamil Muhammad son of Abu Bakr). On the right image I read "al-imam al-Mustans(ir) Billah (amir) al-mu(minin)" (the imam al-Mustansir Billah, commander of the faithful [i.e. caliph]).

Thanks - that is very helpful, though the reference to being a son of Abu Bakr is rather mysterious, unless it means figuratively.

I should have said: it's 24x27mm, 2.94g.

Not really mysterious as al-Kamil was the son of al-Adil Abu Bakr Muhammad

Ah yes.  Knowing the full names of the various personages is clearly useful!
