100 years ago when Warwick
Wroth wrote the
BMC "
Vandals" volume, he attributed a number of the museum's
imitative AE4s with
North African provenance to the "Vandal
period" (note Wroth's
attribution is to the
period not necessarily to the people; see
BMC Vandals pp. xviii-xxi and 17-42; pls. III-IV). None of these
imitative types can be securely assigned to the
Vandals, much less to a specific ruler. Without a
firm provenance,
attribution even to the "Vandalic period" is suspect. What is the difference? A nice generic 5th century imitation: $20. A nice "Vandalic period" imitation: $40. The same coin on
eBay attributed willy-nilly to a random Vandal ruler: $100.
Caveat Emptor.
Official issues in the names of Vandal kings do turn up in
Israel (it borders
Africa, after all). I personally see no problem including
Israel among the qualifying find spots for "Vandalic period"
provenance.
