Fouree denarius of L. Censorinus
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:58:52 pm »
Picked up an unknown coin online and have recently had it identified (many thanks to Enodia!) as a fouree of Roman Republican denarius issue of 82 BC, by L. Censorinus.

I was wondering, there seems to be a number of different theories regarding the coins symbolism, is it possible this fouree was created not only to serve as currency but to exploit the reputation of the real denarius, as a ward against the plague perhaps?

I’ve only been able to find a limited amount information,

Any other info, sources or opinions would be most appreciated
