Bronze Disease?
« on: June 06, 2010, 02:25:35 pm »
I received a batch of coins and had been soaking them in distilled water.
I haven't had a chance to clean the water in several months.
But today I checked on them and found white spots and blobs "growing" on the coins.
What is this stuff?
Is this bronze disease?

And what should I do about it?

Thanks!

It's not bronze disease, which is bluish-green. I've seen it myself, but don't know what it is.

I have had that happen as well. It is odd as it does not do it to all the coins in the soak, just a few. I always figured it was simply materials leaching out due to a reaction with the DW.

I spoke with my brother, and he is suspecting that salts are leaching our through pores in the metal.
Any ideas on whether this may be the case?

Not likely that it is salt.  More likely some type of algae.

Probably some kind of fungus or bacteria.  Just rinse them off and they should be fine.
