Claudius went for a bath!
« on: April 30, 2010, 04:27:50 pm »
I got this Claudius As  last week with some really bad green crust.  I think someone also tried putting a fake green patina to hide the crust (didn't work).  I thought great!  This is a good time to try Gringgotts wizards mix.  Into the pot he went.  I boiled him for about 20 minutes on a low boil, then let him sit overnight.  Next morning the water was green.  The coin has a beautiful redish brown patina.  I picked at the crust with an exacto blade and brushed with a soft nylon brush.  I did nick the patina in a few places and under the green encrustation it is a bit pitted.  I stoped when the encrustation was level to the coin surface.  I touched up the nicks with a spot of Deller's.  It worked great, I only put it on the spots which were bare.  Then let it dry and waxed him.  What do you think?

Thanks, actually the before pic is a bit deceiving.  Here is the dealer pic "Before".

Great job, all old Claudius needed was some TLC!

Thanks!  I bought it for the portrait and full legends.  It's a very nice bold strike.

Hmm, if I was offered the coin in the before or after state, my buy price would be higher for the before.  The worst of the green encrustation probably could have been flaked off very quickly with a scalpel (under magnification).  It now looks over-cleaned.

Ave Jay,

Better look close on the Rev, just below the large S; there may be a few tiny pockets of BD lurking. If so, cure the coin, then...

Deller the entire coin to get it just a bit darker, then apply several coats of Ren Wax to aid the darkening process.

Best,

Kevin

Wow, forgot I posted this here!

Joe I can appreciate that the photo looks like it is over cleaned but in hand it is clearly a redish brown patina and not bare metal.  I just can't seem to get the color right.  In hand it was clearly a fake patina "Before" with the real patina poking out from underneath.

Kevin, No bronze disease just very hard green encrustations
