BAVARIA - Duchy? Passau? ID help needed!
« on: April 07, 2010, 02:26:57 pm »
Hello!

I am hoping to get some help with this Bavarian piece!  It is a nice copper/bronze coin, about 25 mm.

The obverse has Bavarian-style quartered arms over a cross; legend reads:  (from 1 o'clock) .ERNE BA+DVX EPS LEOD
Reverse has what appears to be a tower with a cross atop; with XII  and SV[.] on each side.  Outer legend reads
AVDIATVR + ALT... (last letter in inscription is possiobly an S).

ANy help is appreciated... I have searched my library to no avail!  ???

it is hardly an islamic coin :D :D :D :D

it was struck under Ernst of Bavaria as Bishop of Liege in Belgium

EPS LEOD is the indication of provenance

it could be a liard or a 1/2 liard

period 1581-1612

regards

Should be a 12 sols piece of 1594 AD. from Liege/Luik/Lüttich (French/Dutch/German name) in todays Belgium.
Count Ernest of Bavaria, bishop of Liege/luik.

More info on http://www.duiten.nl/luiktot1612.htm  (go ca. 60% down).

TEKST: ERNE / BA. DV / X. EPS /  LEOD (of variant).

TEKST: AVDIATVR x ALTERA x PARS: x (of variant).

WOW!  :o

Thanks for the QUICK answer!

I never thought to look in the Low Countries!  I suspected a Bishopric, based on the EPS inscription... But the Dutch description makes it crystal clear!

Rick2 - I posted here because it is for MEDIEVAL coins... AND Islamic & Crusader

Both of you were so fast to respond!!!! Many thanks to both of you for the great response!  And THANKS ARMINUS expecially for the great reference web page!  :D

A nice rev. inscription, AVDIATVR x ALTERA x PARS: "Let the other side be heard", "Let's give due consideration to the arguments opposing our position".
