Julia Domna/Hercules with apples
« on: April 06, 2010, 05:53:59 pm »
AE 20  4.19 g

O: Head of Julia Domna (presumably), IOVLIA ...?
R: hERCULES LEANING ON CLUB AND HOLDING APPLES OF HESPERIDES, DIONYIOPOLAIATWN (?) B IN LEFT FIELD

Have found a similar coin for Julia Mam., but can't match up any Julia Dom. that aren't Nikopolis.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dionysopolis. Moesia Inferior, Varbanov (Eng.) 470, R4, probably not the same dies as V.'s plate-coin.

Thanks Archivum.  The obv. legend reads IO VLIA - DOMNA C.  There doesn't seem to be anything following the C, although an E could possibly be obscured in the drapery.  Can you tell me what the correct obv. legend should be?  Thanks again.

Your obverse legend makes the coin Varb. (Engl.) #472

I was maybe a little too hasty, though by the way so was Varbanov. The right reference for your coin is Varbanov (Eng.) 474 (also R4), no B on reverse, with obverse legend as you report it; your coin is apparently a good die-match with V.'s second plate-coin, which he has however mislabled as #473.

Thanks Pekka and Archivum.  We can forgive Varbanov and hold his proof-reader responsible.  I'm very happy to have this coin ID'd.

Can we?
Apparently his books are riddled with errors and inaccuracies and who else to hold responsible but the author?
