Uses for "malachite juice?"
« on: March 30, 2010, 04:02:46 pm »
Hello!

I just cleaned some Byzantine billon cups of green encrustations, which I presume to be malachite, with lemon juice.

Now I have a jar of neon green "malachite juice." Is there anything I can do with this?

I was thinking, if I made the ph alkaline with an additive, could I use this for repatination of other coins somehow? Or some other cool coin or non-coin use? It's just screaming "science project" to me.

Thanks!

Shawn, you should have told me that before I drank it!

Now your late response has made me angry....................and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry!

 Sorry, couldn't resist the response)

Ha!

The question is does anyone under 30 (or I dare say 40) get our humour?

Where is the big green smiley icon when you need one?

If you have an electrolysis kit, this solution can be used to repatinate a coin. Using this solution, reverse the usual arrangement--i.e. put the coin on the anode rather than the usual stainless steel spoon or whatever, put the spoon on the cathode, zap for brief periods (seconds) and inspect each time until you like the result ( if you are using an alligator clip, you should move its grip on the coin or you will leave a shiny spot).

I only did this once as an experiment as I don't like the idea of repatinating coins. But it works.

I should add that I did this using the solution that results from electrolysis of very dirty coins and that solution was basic (sodium bicarbonate). It should still work with your solution, though.

As I recall malachite green is an active ingredient in some tropical fish remedies for ick disease.

Evaporate it and see if it makes crystals.
