Vespasian Countermarked As
« on: March 17, 2010, 09:35:59 pm »
I have (or will have shortly) a countermarked Vespasian As.  However, the countermark is illegible.  Any guesses?  I know on a thread in the past there has been discussion about the countermark NCAPR.  This does not look like this particular countermark, but I cannot tell.

Thanks,

David

NCAPR would be Nero wouldn't it? "Nero Ceasar Augustus Populi Romani" so it couldn't be that on a coin of Vespasian.

Some have suggested the N stands for Nerva.  However, as this previous thread below indicates, it would seem odd to be on coins of Vespasian and not on Titus or Domitian.

I just have not seen many countermarks on imperial coinage related to Vespasian; so this coin is a puzzle--at least to me.
