A puzzle without a solution
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:09:08 am »
I have no idea; this coin came from a lot of uncleaned coins. There's barely anything legible left. Any ideas?

This appears to be a TI.C.A countermark or more likely a degraded imitation.
Host coins of TICA cmk are, among others, asses of Gaius, Germanicus and Agrippa.
A wide group of coins bearing this cmk is however very worn and the second face is blank and flat, without any sign of the original legend or personification. Weights are in the range between 3 and 7 grams. Letters are not well defined. Sometimes the cmk appears to read II.C.A instead. Some appears even to be cast.
It is believed that this group of coins are imitations that were produced just punching a blank flan in order to vehiculate the cmk.
Attached one of mine: 21 mm, 4.1 g.

Thanks Luigi and Frans! What was the actual reason countermarks were applied? This concept is entirely new to me.
