Alypia or Verina
« on: January 27, 2010, 01:01:23 pm »
In the RIC X 2805 it shows a solidus of Euphemia, wife of Anthemius.
On the reverse, Euphemia is depicted together with a second princess: this is designed smaller. The doubt is if second princess s Alypia, daughter of Antemius and Euphemia, or Verina, wife of Leo I.
Anthemius was very close to Leo I and Verina had the title of Avgvsta, which instead Alypia did not have. This is beneficial in case of Verina.
However, the fact that the second figure is drawn smaller than Euphemia, makes me think that instead it is Alypia that as a child (she was only 12 years) is logical that it represented the smallest.
This gold is believed to have been coined in Rome to celebrate the marriage between Alypia and Ricimer: this too is why I tend to think that this is Alypia.
What do you think?
Anyone have a better image of this coin (better than that posed by me, made from a modest fotocopopia)? The coin is in the Dumbarton Oak
