Macrinus from Deultum?
« on: November 09, 2009, 03:40:30 pm »
Dear fellow collectors!

I got the following coin which gives me some troubles. Although worn, it seems to easily attributable:

Macrinus.
Deultum in Thracia.
Obv.: IMP M OPEL SEV MACRINVS (AVG?); radiate head right.
Rev.: COL FL PAC DEVLT; Goddess sitting left mit patera (?) and scepter.
24 mm. 7.50 g.

Unfortunately I couldn't track down the type for Macrinus in Deultum - so if anybody has go a reference for me, I would be very happy.

Owing the fact, that I couldn't find another example (and nothing else, except maybe the style which seems a bit different from those coins from Deultum which I have seen) I started to have some slight concern about the authenticity of the coin. Don't get me wrong: I don't really THINK that it is a fake, but would like you to assue me that it isn't. Please share your opininions with me.

Any help is highly appreciated.

Kind regards and semper pax

The reverse shows Zeus seated left, holding sceptre and patera, eagle at feet. Not in Jurukova with radiate head. Laureate: p. 68, no. 58.

The style is completely consistent for Deultum and I see no reason to doubt the coin.

Hi,

The coin is fine - both dies are in SNG Bulgaria (RUSE)

For type a reference is SNG Bulgaria 101-104 - though none of those 4 coins uses the same obverse die

Thank you very much, you two!

Seems that I got a bit silly when I couldn't find the coin... Well...

At least I am happy now to put the coin into my collection.

Again, thank you.
