Question on reverse legend from Elagabalus den
« on: October 21, 2009, 11:02:06 pm »
Evening all. I just finished cleaning this one (uncleaned purchase from Forvm Auctions) and was wondering about the reverse legend. Is it saying that Sol (depicted) will save the emperor? Protect the emperor?

Any info would be great.

Thanks,
Chris

The legend means "Preserver/Protector of the Emperor", applying to the depicted sun god, and referring to the sun god of Emesa whose cult and holy stone the emperor had brought with him to Rome.

Thanks Curtis. I had noted that the other of his coins with this legend were of the stone/quadriga procession and was wondering if these were from the same "line".
