Coin of Constantine the great ?
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:02:03 am »
Hi everyone
I have a question regarding the coin attached.

It is obviously Constanine the great's follis as Caesar, but I couldn't read the inscription in exergue. Also I see Ω, X and maybe alpha. But not so sure. Could anyone tell me the mint year and the place .

Thanks

Jon

Exergue looks like ALE to me but I can't find the obverse legend which I read as
FL CL CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES. Marks in the fields are K to left, wreath over X over A to right.

It should be a Constantine II follis from Alexandria mint but the overse legend looks unlisted.
More reserch needed.

Hi Jon!

Welcome on the Forum! A very interesting coin indeed. It is Constantine II, son of Constantine I. The obv. legend FL CL CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES occurs according to RIC only in Ticinum. But the ex. - as Andreas has stated - is obviously ALE, meaning Alexandria. Here the series with ALE and the legend IOVI CONSERVATORI CAESS was struck AD 316/17, a very rare series rated r5. But not for Constantine II! And the symbols in the fields don't match. So it could be a new not listed type or a forgery.

Best regards

Thanks everyone, I really enjoy this forum.

This was very helpful. Well, Is there any way to know if it is a forgery or a an r5 ?

Sincerely

Jon

Better and larger pictures would be a good start.
As blurry as they are, even a modern forgery cannot be excluded though there's
nothing in the pictures to indicate that that's what it is either.

Symbols in the fields matches, so it could be the 316-317 issue.

The obverse legend FL CL CONSTANTINVS NOB CAES is similar to the Crispus and Licinius II  legends (FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES - VAL CONSTANTINVS LICINIVS N CAES)

Whit  the 317-320 issue we have coins for Crispus, Licinius II and Constantine II and the legends are:

DN FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES
DN VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C
DN FL CL CONSTANTINVS NOB C

We have again similar legend

This coin complete the first issue
I'ts really hard for me explain in english what i'm thinking...sorry...

Hi Nikko!

The related series have always a K in the l. field, never a star! But it makes sense to put this coin here.

Best regards
