Heads on both sides
« on: August 28, 2009, 07:41:43 pm »
AE 17.5mm  8.31g

I have a number of thick AEs with busts (or heads) on both obv. and rev., and am having trouble with IDs.  Please disregard the Border Collie hair on the obv.  Thanks, as always.

I'm thinking Caracalla or Elagabalus, with Tyche on the reverse.
All the best

Hi Josh,

He does have that crabby-looking Caracallish face!  I see that a number of cities used these devices.  My next challenge will be to figure out where it's from.  Thanks.

Laney, I am by no means certain...but I would center my search on eastern mints...possibly Antioch? I would also agree (tenativly) on the Severan assessment, and it is for sure Tyche on the rev.

These types usually are from eastern Roman colonies in Mesopotamia (and Syria).

Browse wildwinds/acserch for these cities and try to find a matching portrait: Carrhae, Rheseana, Edessa, Singara, ...

Thank you all.  Will search amongst the cities.
