Small Provincial, no idea
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:34:34 pm »
Hi all,
I just can't make sense of the obverse legend here.
What I read is: .I. LEIDAD  - EDI[]. I'm not sure if the I with the two dots was how they
wrote the Phi at the time?
Reverse legend is just NEWKORWN and some kind of figure with a cape blowing behind her
and a piece of cloth in her hand.

19mm, 3.41g

Thanks

Andreas

It is Philadelpheia in Lydia, SNG Cop. 27,366 and SNG Aulock 3064. The reverse Legend is ΦΛ ΦΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΕΩΝ. The town was named Flavia from Vespasian's time on.

It's so obvious now that you've told me, thanks a lot!
Do you have an idea what the reverse could be, since the Aulock coin has a different one and
it isn't in there?

Now that Frank has IDed the city:

BM 37, rev. NEWKOPWN, Nike running r. holding wreath or fillet in both hands, from Caracalla on because of title Neokoros.

It looked though strange that I never considered Nike, thanks!
