That's a nice coin, PYL, and quite a rare one, as far as I know.

Worthy of a COTD thread

That is one nice coin indeed. I love the Serdica mint, especially on later folles where the genius look like he was engraved by Dali.

Tout simplement superbe PYL Smiley

As to rarity, Göbl 259n1 cites four examples.

This officina not in Paris, but Estiot p. 400 cites specimens in Vienna (3), BM, and Oxford.

This coin seems to be RIC 297, not "1295 var." as PYL states.

Looks like the first letter is an "S" to me.

Pete, now that you point it out I can see the "S" it appears that the bottom of the K is flattened out, but it is most assuredly a "K". SAA would make no sense ,being that the KA is a value mark and of course the fact that Aurelian has no mintmark SAA.

Actually, it looks like "SMN" to me, but I know very little above lettering irregularities on these issues.

I was about to say thats one hell of a trick of light for that to be a "K", as I was clearly seeing an "S" like Pete. However, I looked at it for about a minute, and it fell it place, a K after all!

Perception, fascinating! Smiley

It IS KAA. The same marks continued to be used at this mint into the reign of Probus as on the following coin.

Sorry in advance for the frivolity of this post, but the thread reminds me of Rubins' vase or face illusion.

Not frivolous at all! It well illustrates what I was talking about!
