Is it just me or is this tooled, particularly the reverse (look at those rowers)? The description mentions only 'a few cleaning marks'.

It's very unfortunate that somebody tried to "improve" that Hadrian coin, but ended-up decreasing its appeal and probably decreasing its value (it is/was an incredibly cool coin)

Thanks for the link! So it continues to be sold without a correct description....

This poor Hadrian looks as if it were tooled with a screw driver.  I wonder whether the original reverse was an entirely different type.

Certainly smoothed but what parts are tooled?  The reverse drapery?

For me its tooled because there is original metal removed, maybe the reverse drapery is tooled as well

To me, this appears to be a very badly tooled Salonina that has been
"converted" into a much rarer 'Tranquillina'.

What do you think?

Walter,

Yes, obv. legend remade, but I think the original may have been Otacilia Severa rather than Salonina.

Thanks Curtis. I think you are correct (as usual)! - W

Another example of a BTC is this one from Ephesus.

It is not just the artificial "sand patina" that gives this away, it is the
sloppy and amateurish re-carving of the legends and "enhancing" of
the details on the bust and also the temples.

This is a horrible vandalism of an otherwise perfectly acceptable coin,
transforming it into a modern concoction rather than an ancient item
with its original presence and associated historical value as such.

Whoever is responsible should be ashamed of themselves.

Did he use a screw driver to re-engrave it?

Looks like it to me.  Undecided The obverse doesn't have anything original left.

The reverse looks like a cartoon, not even close to the original style--and the obvious, while less obvious, has also been totally reworked.

Etwas überarbeitet und geglättet, fast vorzüglich.

Slightly revised and smoothed, almost exquisite.

It is a familiar style of tooling. I hate it.

And not in the least bit credible.
I have very strong views, as I have expressed before, that people who are clearly trying to deceive other people are.... wait for it... crooks. Criminals! People who would like to make a profit from people who are completely lacking in relevant knowledge, even if they have money.
No ancient coin, even a coin handed down hand to hand from Pope to Pope or Holy Roman Emperor to HRE, etc., etc, etc,,  looks like that.  None.   Personally, I would refuse further interaction with such a person.
