assortment of rulers in an uncleaned lot
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:17:49 am »
I just wanted to share the rulers I have found so far in my uncleaned lot.  Out of 200 coins  I have partially identified or fully attributed about 60.  Of those I have acquired these (in no particular order):

Constans
Claudius II
Constantius II
Licinius I
Probus
Arcadius
Aelia Flacilla
Julia Mamaea
Severus Alexander
Carus
Constantine I
Aurelian
Julian II
Valens
Valentinian I
Valentinian II
Numerian
Tacitus
Constantius Gallus
Quintillus
Constantiine II
Procopius
Gratian
Gordian III
Theodosius I
Theodosius II
Trajan
Delmatius
Valentinian III

Would you agree thats a pretty good assortment?
Not to mention 3 types of city commemoratives and a couple of Greeks.  I still have more to clean !!!

I should mention that the ones I pulled out I thought were the worse of the lot.  Any that appeared chipped or worse.  That means there are more larger coins in this group.. Some turned out perfectly round once the dirt or crust was removed.

Here are few pics.  I started with what I thought was junk to develop my cleaning skills so some are scratched, over cleaned or not cleaned enough because i am afraid i will harm them.  Those I stick in folders to finish when my skills improve. These aren't the best ones but some of the cooler ones I thought.  Some of the Constantinian and Late Empire coins came out way better.

I don't know if I am allowed to mention where I got them but I don't think he is in business anymore anyway.

That is a VERY diverse lot.
While I found most of these (no Aelia Flacilla or Procopius) in uncleaned lots
and a few more (Licinius II, at least one of the two Tetrici, Victorinus, Honorius, probably more it's really easy to forget one),
I had to buy many more coins to get them.

Add Trajan to the list.  Just Identified this beauty:

RIC 704, BMC 1107, C 139 Quadrans Obv: IMPCAESNERVATRAIANAVG - Laureate head right.
Rev: DARDANICI - Woman (Pax?) standing left, holding grain ears.

very diverse indeed. Too bad the Quintillus was so beat up, but to get one at all is a nice find. the Procopius has a half decent flan even - congrats!
Care to share the Theo II and the Gratian?

I'm up to about 130 coins attributed.

Add Delamatius x2 and Valentinian III official issue to the list.

I have only found one campgate in all those coins.  I was hoping for more.

None the less, super diverse lot, I bet it was a lot of fun. What does the Val III look like?

I just went through a lot of 40:

14 Constantius II
2 Constantine I
12 unattributable Constantine era coins (too worn or no inscription on the flan)
8 Paper thin slugs
2 Thick slugs
1 Really dirty modern European coin
1 Washer
1 Handful of dirt (that was thrown in extra for free)
A piece of what looks like somebody's tooth.
Some Lint (I think I had to pay extra for the lint)

So what do you think? Did I do good?
(That's sarcasm, by the way)
