I think this is Claudius
« on: April 11, 2009, 05:22:44 pm »
Hello everyone,

I am a real novice at reading the legends on these coins, but I hope I'm improving.  I just bought this coin and after using the toolkit I think it might be Claudius and possibly it is a barbarous coin.  Any help would be appreciated.

Yes a Claudius As with Minerva reverse.  I have several in my gallery each with a very distinct style and likeness of Claudius.  It is a must have for the early imperial collector.

These strange and barbarous looking portraits may be from a Spanish branch mint.

Here is my specimen and the attribution i once decided on:

Claudius, As (11,10 g, 25-26 mm), provincial branch mint in Hispania (Tarraco , Pobla-mint?), 41-54 AD.
Obv.: [TI CLAVDIV]S CAESAR AVG PM [trP IMP PP], bare head left.
Rev.: S - C , Minerva standing right, brandishing javelin and holding round shield on left arm.
cf.: RIC:116 ; C:84 ; BMC 206 .
