Hi

Claudius II is correct, Milan Mint RIC 169

Obverse reads IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, reverse reads SPES PVBLICA.

Mauseus

Claudius II it is, but the mint is Rome.  For Mediolanum the longer obverse legend IMP C CLAVDIVS P F AVG would be expected, no coin with this reverse (SPES PVBLICA) is known with any other obverse legend.  Also would it be quite unusual to find it without the officina designator P in the exergue.  Also would it be the first recorded coin with a regular left facing bust of this type.  The SPES PVBLICA from Rome is normally a very common coin, with the draped bust facing left as on this coin only 8 specimens are currently recorded.  Best regards, Finn Johannessen

Hi,

Looks like I was mislead by RIC or misread it; Gladius is your man for Claudius II.

Mislead I belive.  I don't have this RIC volume myself because there is cheaper firewood to be found in the small town which I live nearby. ;) Best regards, Finn Johannessen

The correct name of this denomination is antoninianus as it was introduced by the emperor Caracalla, whose real name was Antoninus (not to be confused with Antoninus Pius who came much earlier).
