Caracalla ? Legend type not in Moushmov
« on: August 25, 2003, 03:09:52 pm »
Hi all,
15mm provincial.
The bust on this one has a lot of grunge below nose level so that may not help much apart from the ANTO.. part of the legend on the right (for O read Omega)
The legend on the reverse makes it a Nikopolis but on Moushmov (Nikopolis) I can only find Caracalla with an ANTO.. and a legend, but Moushmov only mentions coins with the N of Nikopolis on a line of its own, whereas this one starts with NIKO.
Can anyone identify it ? Automan  :-* ??

It looks like Diadumenian to me.

Regarding Moushmov and legends, the catalogue is very incomplete and does not list all minor varieties. No conclusions regarding attribution can thus be drawn only because a legend is lacking there.

as auto said

mousmov 1343 Legend.

yep that all it says, but it clear and succinct

BUT althought the portrait is a wringer for Dia (rounded hair, prominent nose)

a portion of his (lengthy) legend must have been condensed

Actually I just sold one like this with a much better reverse and a mostly readable obverse and it was a Diadumenian.  I could not find it in Moushmov either but I found a picture of it in the first reference book I ever had....Klawans.

Hey Aragon
You couldn't possibly post a scan of the pic from the book, could you ? Or send it to me by email to z7dane@bluemail.ch ?
Does Klawans give a reference number for it ?
Many thanks

ive already listed the mousmov number for diadumenian/nicopolis in post above , it was:

mousmov 1343 - Legend

(mousmov simply lists any city legend as,.....legend, be it legend or legend within wreath etc)

i did not say it wasnt diadumenian , i was just observing the obv legend length (variable), considering the fact the coin is only 15mm *.  and as is often stated , many provincials have varied legend types/length/context etc , and many spelling etc .  But as i mentioned the bust is very distinguishable :

* ie K M OPELLI  ANTWNI  DIADO V MENIANO C
