Myth Busters and coin cleaning
« on: February 21, 2009, 02:27:14 am »
I watch Myth Busters all the time and the other day they were attempting to verify the myth of using Coca Cola to clean various objects including coins. They put several different objects, including pennies and teeth in various solutions including Coke, acid, and lemon juice and the Coke cleaned all of them better than anything. Anyone ever try this? Don't know if I would but was just wondering.

some use it for silver, i have tried it once but prefer lemon or the tin foil method, but every coin is a different case and should be treated differently.... and with care and patience!!!

It is the Phosphoric Acid in coke that does the 'cleaning' . But unless you want bright and shiny, keep it away from old coins, especially copper or bronze. you won't like the results.

This is a little unrelated, but I did a science experiment testing red wine, lemon juice, pepsi, vinegar, and coffee to see which corrode a new u.s. penny the quickest. Lemon juice and vinegar did the most corroding, which was into the zinc core of the pennies.
