Back to #95 -- Second example
« Reply #125 on: February 13, 2010, 11:02:24 am »

Here's another example, AE27, of unlisted type #95 *, Elagabalus laur. and cuirassed bust r. / Athena stg. l. with owl, shield behind, YP IOYL SELEYKO[Y] MARKIANOPOLITW[N], OY and AR ligate, fourth Y and last N undetectable on my specimen; worth comparing HJ 6.27.4.1, Elagabalus and Julia Soaemias, also Seleucus, R9, from a different reverse die.

Regarding Jochen's #99 Ares, H&J, in my edition, lists it as 6.36.11.1, but I am unsure on the obverse die comparison - will study a little closer in a few minutes. I am quite sure that the reverse type is not in my collection.

Hi Charles!

Yes, you are right. #99 is Ares Hristova/Jekov No.6.36.11.1; AMNG I/1, 1104. I have corrected it. Thanks for checking the contributions!

Jochen, can you tell me how many separate entries or varieties HJ's book has?
Just to put into perspective the 100 unlisted coins you have found.

Hi Andreas!

There are 220 pages in H/J with about 5 ex. per page = about 1100 ex. So we have now c.10% new ones. And you have seen that there are different categories:
1. legend variations and legend distributions (most of all)
2. new die combinations
3. corrections
4. new bust types
5. new rev. types, among them some complete new ones
From the last category we have now 30 types.

If there are errors please post it. By the amount of attributions it's quite possible.

A new emperor for Markianopolis?

Antoninius Pius, AD 138-161
AE 19, 5.33g
obv. AVT AIL AVR  - [A]NTWNEINO
       Bare head r.
rev. MARIANO(sic!) - POLEIT[W] .
      Bunch of wine-grapes
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
      c) not in Hristova/Jekovv
From Forum Ancients Gallery, Bard Gram O coll.

Yes, Forum's Gallery is a source of unknown treasures. I have started to check Markianopolis for unlisted types. A side effect will be that I give references to all coins which I'm able to attribute. I hope that this side effect will not became a collateral damage.

Actually there are no coins of Antoninus Pius from Markianopolis at all. It is common opinion that Markianopolis started coinage under Commodus. Varbanov has listed 1 type of Sabina and 1 type of Marcus Aurelius, but both with no evidence for authencity. So I think here we have the same problem: Authentic or not? Any opinion highly appreciated!

Probably Hadrianopolis, Jurukova 33-36, rather than Marcianopolis misspelled, I would say.
