Hristova & Jekov, Markianopolis Addenda I
« on: January 19, 2009, 01:13:30 pm »
For those of us interested in the issues of Markianopolis,  H & J is the most useful and complete reference.  Like all huge compendia, it does have a few errors and, more importantly, still is not complete.  There seems to be many new dies appearing.  I am hoping that this thread becomes a long term clearing house for posting errors and dies as we encounter them.  Even better, this could become a single source for annotations in our own copies of H & J, keeping them up to date.  Here is my first contribution:

Caracalla & Julia Domna, unlisted reverse die
ANTWNINOC AVGOVCTOC IOV/LIA / DOMNA (same die as 6.19.35.2 and others)
VP KVNTILIANOV MARKIANOPOLITWN
Serapis, facing left, in tetrastyle temple, E in left field
New die should be included within 6.19.46.3-7
If you watch long enough, even a treefrog is interesting.  Umberto Eco

Maybe it´s useful to add also the corresponding Pick/AMNG reference?

AMNG I, p.229, no. 688 in this specific case.

I'm not sure, is mine the same obverse die?
Now looking at them side by side I think it is.
Mine's AMNG 652, Varbanov (Eng) I, 1086 and since it's ex FORVM that's unlikely to be wrong.

Wow, you are correct.  That is a different reverse die.  This may be more productive that I imagined.  Your coin is Addendum #3.  I will correct my above post accordingly.

Hi whitetd!

Nice idea! So I will join the thread too. I have 82 ex. from Markianopolis and 45 of them are not in H&J or are variations. Often the descriptions in H&J are not quite correct or perhaps typos. Here is my first one:

#8

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 26, 10.76g, 210°
struck under governor Aurelius Gallus
obv. AV KL CEP - [CEVHROC P]
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. V AV GALLOV MARKIAN - OPOLITWN (RK ligate, R reversed!)
Dionysos, nude, wearing boots, stg. l., holding fileted thyrsos with l. hand and
pouring wine from kantharos in r. hand.
AMNG I/1, 556 var.; not in Hristova/Jekov; Varbanov (engl.) 774 var.
very rare, VF, obv. struck with worn die, a bit excentric
ex coll. Hoeft

AMNG 556 has a different rev. legend: ending with TW, different legend breaks and no ligate RK! And the pic on pl. XVI, no.26 doesn't match Pick's description of this coin!

The obv. is Hristova/Jekov No. 6.14.8.3 and looks like a die match. The rev. is not listed.

Best regards

Septimius Severus 193-211
AE 16, 3.6g, 45°
obv. AV L(?) CEP - CEVHRO[C?]
bust, laureate, r.
rev. MARKIAN - OPOLITW / [N?]
Kybele, richly draped, wearing kalathos, seated l. on throne, tympanon behind, flanked
by two lions, resting with l. arm on arm of throne and holding patera in outstretched r.
hand
AMNG I/1, 586 var. (rev.), has OPOLITWN), AMNG I/1, 585 (obv., has CEPT); not in Hristova/Jekov; not in Varbanov (engl.); BMC p. 28, 4 var (legend variation, AE 24)
about VF/EF, green patina
ex coll. Hoeft

This type belongs to Hristova/Jekov Nr. 6.14.31.18-20, but the depicted types have always draped and cuirassed bust, whereas my coin has a head only.

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 26, 9.32g, 240°
struck under legate Aurelius Gallus
obv. AV MAR AVRH - ANTWNINOC
Youthful bust, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind, laureate, r.
rev. V.AV.GALLOV.[MARKIANO]POLITWN.
Tyche [with kalathos], stg. facing, head l., holding cornucopiae in l. arm and
rudder in r. hand.
ref.: AMNG I/1, 609; Varbanov (engl.) 917; not in Hristova/Jekov!
rare, EF, light smoothing, dark green patina
ex coll. Hoeft

In Hristova/Jekov is re. type only listed for Faustinianus No. 6.18.38.1-2. I don't know why it is not in H&J although it is in AMNG.

Macrinus & Diadumenian 217-218
AE 28 (Pentassarion), 11.86g, 0°
struck under governor Furius Pontianus
obv. AVT K OPEL CEV MAKREINOC KM OPE ANTWNEINO / C (in the field!)
Confronted heads of Macrinus, laureate, r., and Diadumenian, bare-headed, l.
rev. VP PONTIANOV MAR - KIANOPOLEITWN (AR ligate)
Apollo, nude, with tresses, standing frontal, head r., bow in l. hand, holding
r.hand over head; snake coiling around tree stump r.
l. field E (for Pentassarion)
AMNG I/1, 726 (3 ex., Bukarest, Paris, Turin, OPE known from Turin), doesn't mention the strange position of the last C in the field!; not in Hristova/Jekov; Varbanov (engl.) 1146; Moushmov 520
very rare, VF
ex coll. Hoeft

This type belongs to Hristova/Jekov No. 6.24.7.12. AMNG 726 is cited. But the obv. has a different legend and the last WN in the rev. legend ist not ligate like in H&J.

Macrinus & Diadumenianus, AD 217-218
AE 28, 13.52g, 30°
struck under governor Furius Pontianus
obv. AV K OPEL CEV MAKREINOC KM OPEL ANTWNEINOC
Confronted busts of Macrinus, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind,
laureate, r., and Diadumenian, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind, bare-
headed, l.
rev. VP PONTIAN - OV MARKIANOPO / LITWN
Unbearded youthfull Asklepios, wearing himation with nude l. shoulder, stg.
facing, head turned l., snake-entwined staff under his r. armpit
AMNG I/1, 745, pl. XVII, 5 (2 ex., Löbbecke, Sophia); not in Hristova/Jekov; Varbanov (engl.) 1252
rare, VF+, dark-green patina
ex coll. Hoeft

Hristova/Jekov cite AMNG 745 for their No 6.24.20.1-2 but pic 1 has heads only and pic 2 has a different obv. legend partially in the ex. The rev legend of pic 2  matches my coin with its LITWN in the ex., but it is not the youthful Asklepios.
Hristova/Jekov No. 6.24.20.5 seems to have the youthful Asklepios on the rev., but that's it. All other features are different.

obv. AV K OPELL CEVH MAKRINOC / KM OPELLI / ANTWNIN / OC
Confronted heads of Diadumenian, r., and Macrinus, laureate, l.
rev. VP PONTIAN - OV MARKIANOP / OLITW / [N?]

very rare, about VF/good F
ex coll. Hoeft

Hristova/Jekov has one type with Macrinus l. and Diadumenianus r., No. 6.24.20.5 and cites AMNG 746. But the obv. legend is different and the rev. has LITWN in ex. instead OLITWN.

not in AMNG: AMNG I/1, [836] var. (rev, 1 ex., Mionnet, has no ligate AR), AMNG I/1, 839 (obv.); not in Hristova/Jekov; Varbanov (engl.) 1589 var. (has AVRH); Moushmov 651
good F/about VF
Note: Pick has used square brackets, because he had this coin not in his hands.
ex coll. Hoeft

Hristova/Jekov has two types with river-gods No. 6.26.32.1-2 but not this rev. type with the reed hold over the r. shoulder. It's a new type.

This is the same type as the coin before. I have made an error because of the rough surface.

Elagabal, AD 218-222
AE 27, 10.6g, 180°
struck under governor Iulius Antonius Seleucus
obv. AVT KM AVRH - ANTWNEINOC
Head, laureate, r.
rev. VP IOVL ANT CELEVKOV MARKIANOPOLITWN (both OV, AR and WN ligate)
Nemesis(?), in long girdled, partly thrown over, double chiton, stg. facing, head
l., holding measuring rod and puff of garment in l. arm and scales in
outstretched r. hand.
AMNG I/1, 845 (1 ex., Löbbecke); not in Hristova/Jekov; not in Varbanov (engl.)
Very rare, good F/about VF
ex coll. Hoeft

Note: This is the first coin I have seen on which Nemesis(?) is wearing only scales and measuring rod without a wheel. I think this is the reason too that Pick has added a question mark to Nemesis.

This type is not listed in Hristova/Jekov. So it is a new type.

I will stop for now, best regards

Hi whitetd!

Nice idea! So I will join the thread too. I have 82 ex. from Markianopolis and 45 of them are not in H&J or are variations. Often the descriptions in H&J are not quite correct or perhaps typos.

Thank you Jochen!  After one day, it is apparent that this undertaking will be huge.  So much for good intentions.  I had hoped that this project might render the need for a copy of AMNG less important.  It is not.  Varbanov lacks illustrations and details such as legend breaks and it's reliability is suspect.  To my surprise, H&J provides only examples for which they have a photograph.  They have ignored numerous specimens listed by AMNG and Varbanov.  Jochen's experience of having 45 of 82 examples not adequately represented in H&J is mirrored by my own collection.  I still have more to post also.  I extend the invitation to those that collect issues of Markianopolis to post!

PS.  Keep track of the numbers of the addenda so that this list remains manageable!
