Bar Kochba
« on: January 12, 2009, 01:03:45 pm »
Hi all. I purchased this coin as Bar Kochba Mildenberg 138 24.4 mm. When I got it I see both sides have identical dies, is it palm tree and vine leaf? Also the inscription seems to me as nonsense. Can anyone help?

This is not a coin that was made during the Bar Kochba revolt as far as I know.  I don't have my references with me, but it does not look like any that I can remember seeing.  Also I think the inscription might be Arabic, but I can't really tell from the pictures.

I did look at references and it does look like a BK coin but with similar dies on both sides. Meshorer in TJC mentions such a BK coin.

Dear Joel
this is an Islamic Umayad Era coins minted mostly in Damascus and holyland area, it imittate the Herod Antipas coinage, but it s surely not a Judaean coin.
and as Howard mention it has very clear Arabic script saying (Muhammad Rasoul ) Muhammad messenger.
all the best
Salem
