FORVM's Mystery Islamic and Medieval - Help!
« on: November 22, 2008, 02:53:06 pm »
FORVM is an ancient coin specialty dealer.  We have lately expanded into crusader coins.  I don't usually buy Islamic and most other medieval coins but I still get them on occasion with other coins.  I am not sure I will ever learn them.   I could use a little help with these types now and then.  Some of our unattributed coins are below.  Any help identifying them will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The third one is common Islamic fals.  Simple Umayyad type. no mint or date.
Obv: "La Ilaha Illa Allah wahdah" (No God but Allah only"
rev: "Muhammad rasul Allah"  ( Muhammad is the messenger of Allah),

I like to collect all specomens of this type.

Hi Joe

The first one is an anonymous Ottoman manghir, no. O 779 in Olcer's 'Ornamental copper coinage of the Ottoman Empire': unfortunately he doesn't suggest a mint or date for this.

Best wishes,

Alan

Since consignors seem to keep sending medieval and Islamic coins, I have started buying the references.  BMC Islamic was a bit expensive.  Its not here yet, I hope it is a good ref.  Unfortunately for the Islamic, even the books don't seem to help me.   I flipped through a few books, including Mitchner's World of Islam and didn't spot these.  The first one is either really nice or really fake.  The second seems like it would be easy to spot in the refs but I didn't see it.  Thanks for any help you can offer.

Top: Arab-Byzantine, Dimashq, like SICA-1, 566-568 but finer style, no bird on T, variant officina symbol.

Bottom: Mameluk, Khushqadam, date and mint missing.

For Islamic, catalogs not much help if no read Arabic.
